Mykonos

Image
Mykonos is a charming place and is picture perfect from a distance. However, aside from a day trip to Delos, there is not much to do here other than shop and party, neither of which is our cup of tea.  There were four to five cruise ships at port each day and it was quite crowded until the evenings.  A highlight for us was to chill at the pool with incredible views of the harbor and neighboring islands.   Our room We had quite the interesting room in Mykonos.  It is stark white with beautiful marble.  However, what sets this room apart is the lighting.  The video explains it all.

Naxos

Chora (Naxos City) Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades and Naxos City is a charming city on the water.  Is it made for tourism?  Yes and no.  Today, it is definitely built up in certain areas to support tourism but long before the hoards the city and island have gone through many eras, from prehistoric times to the Roman era, then the Venetian era, Ottoman occupation and finally the modern era.  One of the most notable is the Venetian era due to the large castle at the top of the hill in Naxos City that is still occupied today.   The island is one of the few that is self sufficient and financially independent from Greece.  This is not only from tourism, but there is fertile land and a cooperative climate where livestock are raised for dairy and meat and olives, potatoes, citrus and walnuts are grown, to name a few.  The other major industry is marble quarrying.  They extract 80,000 tons of marble annually.  An entire mountain vi...

Santorini

The Caldera The most impressive part of Santorini is knowing that we are staying on the rim of a caldera of an active, albeit dormant, volcano that drastically altered the course of world history.  Every spot on the island is a photo op.   The Heart of Santorini… picture perfect.  Built into the side of a rock cliff is the small Chapel of Agios Nicholaos.  In Santorini churches truly are everywhere. View from the highest point in Santorini at Pyrgos Kallistis.  At the top of the hill we discovered a church/gift shop, of course! Akrotiri A highlight of the island is the prehistoric city of Akrotiri.  It is believed that the first inhabitants were here around the fifth millennium BCE.  They were an advanced society, evidenced by their three story houses with running plumbing.  Alas, after a few thousand years around 1600 BCE it came to an abrupt end with the eruption of Thera, which is now the modern day Santorini.
